Author:

Overview

Both are platinum RTDs with the same resistance–temperature curve; the difference is the resistance at 0 °C — 100 Ω versus 1000 Ω. The choice is really about wiring distance and noise immunity.

Key Points

PT1000 for long cables. With the same lead resistance, the relative error is ten times smaller, so PT1000 tolerates long two-wire runs.
PT100 for multi-sensor systems. Most transmitters, PLC modules and calibration equipment are specified for PT100.
Battery-powered devices. PT1000 draws less current and is preferred for portable instruments.
High temperature. Both have the same temperature limits; the element construction matters more than the nominal resistance.

Summary

If the instrument already supports PT1000 and the cable run is long, choose PT1000; otherwise PT100 remains the safest, most widely supported option.
